VisGroup visits Linköping University

Laura Garrison and her PhD student Amy Zhang headed to our neighbours in Nörrkoping, Sweden for a research visit from December 08-12, 2025. The week was dedicated to developing ongoing collaborations and potential avenues of research with the Visualization and Interaction Design (VID) group headed by Prof. Miriah Meyer at Linköping University.

The highlights of the visit were, without a doubt, the research discussions we had with VID group members and alumni. This included demos from Miriah’s current PhD students (Daniela, Seva, Kate, José) that touched on topics from critical perspectives in visualization to interaction design for understanding social contexts. In a reading group session and workshop, Amy had the opportunity to discuss the backstory to and critical methods employed in her work with Laura on deconstructing implicit beliefs in visual data journalism [1].

Aside from spending time at the office, Laura and Amy made frequent trips to Visualiseringscenter C, a science center with exhibits and immersive dome shows, many of which disseminate the visualization research conducted at the university. The duo also enjoyed a nice fika break or two (or more) as one does in Sweden.
