After a short period as a department engineer, Åsmund Birkeland started on his Ph. D. in 2009 within the Illustrasound project. He finished his degree in 2013 and continued at the department as a senior engineer, focusing on software development tailored for research. His focus has been mainly on visualization and bioinformatics.
